Proper loudspeaker placement is critical and can make the difference between a system that just sounds good from a system that truely sounds great. So let's explore where to properly place those loudspeakers and take the first step towards an incredible home theater experience.

Cheapmachines - Public/Private

"Public/Private" was an unmanned sound installation which ran for five days between 28/08/07 and 01/09/07 in an empty bank vault in London. Each evening, an automated drone was set to run uninterrupted for three hours. The event was held in complete darkness. No instructions were given regarding the size or layout of the space. People where left to freely explore the vaults chambers. The sounds were generated in real time using the SuperCollider software environment and amplified via three DB Technologies L80 powered speakers distributed throughout the vault to provide stereo diffusion of the sounds, the unconventional speaker placement making use of the unusually thick, natural reverberation present in the space (the vault essentially being a large, sealed concrete and metal box for keeping money in, built in 1928.) The wall thickness is 400mm and the ceiling height is approx 2.5m. The software allowed for certain parameters such as pitch/frequency, volume, duration etc. to be suggested by the user. The computer then interpreted these instructions and generated a live, real-time composition without the need for any further user/programmer interaction. The purpose of the event was to provide a live listening experience which was devoid of any visual information or any human performance element. The sounds (where possible) were set to a volume/pitch which made normal levels of conversation difficult amongst visitors to the installation (for example, tones in the 85-255 hz ...

N Scale Con-Cor/Rivarossi UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger with Soundtraxx Tsunami TSU750 Micro Sound Decoder

Streamlined Backshop Services present a sample of the installation services available for your DCC project. This project using the Con-Cor/Rivarossi Challenger as a platform utilizes a Soundtraxx TSU750 Tsunami Micro decoder for some light functions and sound and a TCS M1 for front light and motor control. The backup light fixture on the tender has been modified to accept an operational LED. An 0603 Warm White LED with 1000 ohm resistor is used for the front and rear lights. The speakers are (2) 13x13mm speakers aimed down through the floor adn are available from Streamlined Backshop Services and (2) 13mm rounds aimed up through the coal load. The sound file is Heavy Steam version available from Soundtraxx. The Athearn Challenger is fitted with a TSU750 also. I do not know the version as it was sent in for repair. The speaker is the facotry installation however. The video is a great example of the volume I am able to get out of many installationsby using a good mix of speakers, placement, and natural baffeling from the loco shell as well as a side-by-side comparison of the two versions of this model. Also be sure to compare the sound in this video to the sound car video on my channel. This is a good reference of the difference between Soundtraxx, ESU Loksound, Digitrax and MRC sound. The First Noel - Christmas Eve 2004 - St. John The Divine, NYC

Here is a recording from the 2004 10.30PM Midnight Mass Service at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine, NYC. Timothy J. Brumfield, Organist and Johnson Flucker, Director of Cathedral Music conducting the Cathedral Combined Choirs, with brass, timpani and strings. The last verse is Tim Brumfield's own arrangement! (Thanks Tim!). I had to trim the end of the clip due to YouTube time constraints, but I will post the final verse and Tim's mini organ improvisation in another clip. This recording features the 'temporary' 3-manual/pedal Allen digital organ installed just a few days before the 2001 Christmas Eve service, right after the devastating December 18th, 2001 fire in the North Transept. The sound of the Allen on this recording was the best it ever sounded in the Cathedral, after much experimentation with speaker placement and tuning from the console by Organ Curator Doug Hunt and Allen's technicians. You will see a picture of the recording setup on the original 1910 Op. 150/150A Skinner console, still covered in dust from the devastating fire on Dec. 18th, 2001 - with a hand-written note by Organ Curator Doug Hunt telling people 'Do Not Touch' the console! Former Cathedral Organist Dorothy Papadakos's old Sony DAT recorder is below the HHB CD burner I used to capture these services for a few years after the 2001 fire. So I got these awesome wall decals from www.whatisblik.com and after they were put up, we really wanted to "Play" Super Mario. So we made it so the wall is interactive! So now, if you walk in my office and jump up to touch a coin or mushroom, they make the actual sound from the game! The speaker is in the ceiling tile right by the door. I am not going to get too technical with step by step, but I will give everyone enough to get started. I will list my equipment and software, but there are many other setups and software that would work as well. 1. You will need a computer. I used an old iBook. 2. You will need a webcam. I used an old iSight connected to the iBook. 3. You will need speakers. I used some cheapy $20 USB ones. 4. You will need some webcam software capable of motion sensing movement. I used EvoCam by www.evological.com 5. You will need to download sound clips of your sounds. I just searched around on Google until I found some .aif files of Super Mario Sounds 6. '59 Jensen P10R Speaker

Quick demo of a '59 Jensen, out of a Tweed Vibrolux that is being rehabbed. I'm not sure about the seam in the cone, if that was how they were built back then or if it was a tear or something. Looks to good, like it's supposed to have that seam. For not being in a cab, this thing (once I tweaked the amp a bit to cut some highs), sounds holy shit bag damn good! I shot the vid rather quick cuz the mic placement and stuff kinda came together just right. Didn't realize I might have had a slight outta tune g or b string. On a side note I am liking the DR strings I switched too (red version), they sound, feel and last a lot longer. Ernie Ball and Daddario can kiss my @ss now!

The title, which translates to Dialogue of the Double Shadow, was inspired by an excerpt from the 1924 play Le Soulier de satin by Paul Claudel. Written for live clarinet and its pre-recorded counterpart, it is an atonal tour de force of technical virtuosity and timing. The work is divided into thirteen sections beginning with "Sigle initial" and ending with "Sigle final" with alternating Strophes (live clarinet) and Transitions (pre-recorded clarinet). The "shadow" effect and interplay between the two entities is spellbinding, as the tape serves not only as a reflection of the soloist but also as a means of transformation and magnification. As in other compositions by Boulez, spatial relationships dictated by the placement of performers and audience play an integral part. The soloist is stationed in the center of the hall, surrounded by the audience.
